Understanding energy ratings and what they mean
When looking at new kitchen appliances, you'll see energy labels showing ratings from A (green and most efficient) to G (red and least efficient). These ratings tell you how much electricity the appliance uses compared to others of similar size.
"When we first opened our Mansfield showroom, we made a conscious decision to focus on appliances with high energy ratings," says Michael. "I've seen too many homeowners shocked by their energy bills after installing inefficient kitchen appliances. That's why we take the time to explain how these ratings work and what they'll mean for your energy use over time."
The UK energy rating system changed in 2021, becoming stricter about which appliances can receive top ratings. This means an A-rated appliance today is much more efficient than one with the same rating from several years ago.
Energy-Efficient Appliance Categories
Refrigeration energy efficiencyYour fridge and freezer run 24/7, so their energy efficiency makes a big difference to your bills. When choosing these appliances, we recommend:
When we installed new kitchen appliances for the Wilsons in Shirebrook (just a 10-minute drive from our Mansfield showroom), we helped them select a fridge-freezer that uses 40% less energy than their old model. They've told us their electricity bills have noticeably dropped since the installation. |
Cooking appliance efficiency featuresModern ovens, hobs, and microwaves offer amazing energy-saving features:
"We've installed lots of induction hobs for customers in areas around Mansfield like Sutton-in-Ashfield and Kirkby-in-Ashfield," Emma says. "People are amazed at how quickly they heat up and how much they cut down on cooking times." |
Water-saving dishwashersDid you know that using a dishwasher actually uses less water than washing by hand? Today's most efficient models use just 6-10 litres per cycle, while hand-washing the same dishes might use 60 litres or more. Look for features like:
For our customers in towns like Warsop and Clipstone, we often recommend dishwashers with delayed start features so they can run during off-peak electricity hours. |
Energy-optimized laundry appliancesWhile we primarily focus on kitchen appliances, we do help our customers create laundry spaces with energy efficiency in mind. When selecting washing machines and dryers, we suggest:
|
Efficient extraction and ventilationKitchen ventilation units (extractors or cooker hoods) vary widely in energy usage. Look out for:
We recently fitted an intelligent extractor fan for a customer in Ollerton that automatically adjusts its speed based on cooking conditions, saving substantial energy compared to running at full power all the time. |
Understanding Energy Labels
New UK energy rating system explained
The UK energy label system changed in 2021. The old system had too many products reaching A+ or higher, making it hard to spot truly efficient appliances. The new system:
- Uses a simple A-G scale (no more A+, A++, etc.)
- Makes it harder to get the top ratings (many former A+++ products are now B or C)
- Shows energy usage in kWh per year or per 100 cycles
When you visit our Mansfield showroom, we can show you exactly what these labels mean and how to compare products properly.
How to interpret energy consumption figures
Energy labels show consumption as kilowatt-hours (kWh), which can be confusing. Here's a simple way to understand what they mean:
1 kWh costs about 28p (as of April 2025)
So if a dishwasher uses 0.7 kWh per cycle, that's roughly 20p per wash in electricity costs.
"I always help customers work out the real-world costs of running different appliances," explains Michael. "Some people are surprised when they realize a cheaper appliance might cost them hundreds more in electricity over its lifetime."
Water usage ratings
For dishwashers and washing machines, the energy label also shows water usage:
- Dishwashers: litres per cycle
- Washing machines: litres per cycle or per year
Lower numbers are better for both your water bills and the environment.
Noise ratings and their importance
Energy labels also include noise ratings in decibels (dB). This is particularly important if you have an open-plan kitchen or use appliances at night.
For reference:
- 40 dB: whisper quiet
- 50 dB: quiet conversation
- 60 dB: normal conversation
- 70+ dB: noisy and potentially disruptive
Cost-Benefit Analysis
Initial investment vs. long-term savings
Energy-efficient appliances often cost more upfront but save money over time. For example:
- An A-rated dishwasher might cost £50-100 more than a D-rated model
- But it could save £30-40 per year in running costs
- Over a 10-year lifespan, that's £300-400 in savings
"When we design kitchens for customers in Mansfield and surrounding areas like Rainworth, I always talk about lifetime costs, not just purchase price," says Michael. "It's about thinking long-term."
Typical payback periods for premium efficient models
Based on our experience installing kitchens throughout Nottinghamshire, here are typical payback periods:
- Refrigeration: 3-5 years
- Dishwashers: 3-4 years
- Cooking appliances: 5-7 years
- Laundry appliances: 3-5 years
The exact figures depend on your usage patterns and local energy costs.
Energy calculators and estimation tools
We use simple tools to help our customers understand potential savings. For example, replacing a 10-year-old fridge-freezer with a new A-rated model could save around £45-60 per year in electricity.
"During a kitchen consultation, we can calculate approximately how much you'd save with different appliance options," explains Emma. "It helps make the decision much clearer when you can see the numbers."
Grant and incentive schemes available
Several schemes might help reduce the cost of upgrading to energy-efficient appliances:
- Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme
- Local authority grants for energy improvements
- Occasional retailer trade-in programs
These schemes change regularly, so ask us about current options when you visit our showroom.

Latest Efficiency Technologies
Heat pump dryer technologyHeat pump dryers cost more initially but use about 50% less energy than conventional condenser dryers. They're perfect for utility rooms and integrated kitchen-laundry spaces. |

|
LED lighting in refrigeratorsLED lights use up to 90% less energy than traditional bulbs and produce less heat (which means the fridge doesn't have to work as hard to stay cool). |
Sensor-based operation in dishwashersModern dishwashers can detect:
This "smart" operation can reduce energy use by 10-20% compared to fixed programs. |
Induction cooking energy benefitsInduction hobs are incredibly efficient compared to gas or electric ceramic hobs:
"We've installed induction hobs for many customers in Mansfield and nearby towns like Newark," says Michael. "People are amazed at how quickly they heat up and how responsive they are." |

Installation for Optimal Efficiency
Proper positioning for efficient operation
Where and how appliances are installed affects their efficiency:
- Refrigerators need space around them for proper ventilation
- Dishwashers need to be level for optimal water usage
- Ovens benefit from proper insulation around the housing
"I always check that there's adequate ventilation for appliances during installation," Michael explains. "It's something that's often overlooked but can significantly impact energy use and appliance lifespan."
Correct ventilation setup
Proper ventilation is crucial for:
- Preventing overheating
- Maintaining efficiency
- Extending appliance lifespan
Our installation team ensures all appliances have the airflow they need to operate efficiently.
Maintenance tips for maintaining efficiency
To keep your appliances running efficiently:
- Clean refrigerator coils annually
- Descale kettles, coffee machines, and steam ovens regularly
- Clean dishwasher filters monthly
- Check and clean oven door seals
- Maintain extractor fan filters
"I always show customers how to properly maintain their appliances after installation," says Michael. "It's amazing how many people don't realize that simple maintenance can keep appliances running efficiently for years longer."
Are energy efficient appliances worth the extra cost?
Absolutely! The initial price difference between energy-efficient and standard appliances is typically paid back through energy savings within 3-5 years. Since quality appliances last 10-15 years, you'll enjoy several years of savings after that payback period.
Plus, efficient appliances often include better technology and build quality, meaning they last longer and perform better.
One of our customers in Boughton reported saving nearly £200 per year after we replaced all their kitchen appliances with high-efficiency models.
What is the most energy efficient kitchen appliance?
Induction hobs are typically the most energy-efficient cooking appliance, converting about 90% of their energy use into heat (compared to around 40% for gas hobs).
For overall savings, replacing an old refrigerator with a new efficient model usually gives the biggest return since these appliances run constantly.
How do I know if my appliance is energy efficient?
Check the energy label - all new appliances must display one. The rating scale goes from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). The label also shows annual energy consumption in kWh.
For existing appliances without labels, we can help estimate their efficiency based on age and model.
What rating should energy efficient appliances be?
For maximum efficiency and long-term savings, we recommend:
- Refrigeration: A or B rating
- Dishwashers: A, B, or C rating
- Washing machines: A or B rating
- Ovens: A or B rating
- Tumble dryers: A+++ on the old scale (these still use this system)
Remember that since the rating system changed in 2021, even B and C ratings can represent very efficient appliances.
