Why Put Your Washing Machine in the Kitchen?
Most UK homes have washing machines in the kitchen, and there's good reasons for this:
- It's where your water pipes and drains already are - saves you loads on extra plumbing
- You can keep an eye on the wash while cooking dinner
- No need for a separate utility room (perfect if you've got a smaller home)
- Modern integrated appliances look really smart in kitchens
One customer in Mansfield told us: "I never thought we'd fit a washing machine and dryer in our galley kitchen, but Michael showed us how to tuck them under the worktop with matching cupboard doors. You can't even tell they're there now!"
Washing Machine Options for Your Kitchen
There's loads of ways to fit laundry stuff in your kitchen:
Hidden Behind Cupboard DoorsThis is dead popular in Mansfield homes. Your washing machine and dryer get special doors that match your kitchen cupboards. When they're closed, nobody knows they're there! Michael says: "We fitted an integrated washing machine for a family in Shirebrook last month. They couldn't believe how seamless it looked - the machine completely disappeared behind the cupboard front." |
Stacked Washer-Dryer SetsIf your kitchen's tight on floor space but has height, we can stack your washing machine and dryer in a tall cupboard. This works brilliant for smaller kitchens in Mansfield's terraced houses. |
Compact AppliancesWashing machines now come in slimline versions (just 45cm wide instead of the usual 60cm). They're perfect for squeezing into tight spaces and still wash about 6-7kg of clothes. |
Washer-Dryer CombosOne machine that does both washing and drying - saves tons of space! They're not as good as separate machines, but they're proper handy if space is tight. |
Where to Put Your Washing Machine in the Kitchen
We've fitted washing machines all over Mansfield kitchens:
- Under the worktop - the classic spot, tucked between cupboards
- In a corner - good use of awkward spaces
- In a tall unit - especially for stacked appliances
- In an island - if you've got the right plumbing
Emma says: "We helped a customer in Kirkby-in-Ashfield hide their washing machine in their kitchen island. It looks dead smart and they can load it while the kids sit at the breakfast bar doing homework."

Creative Kitchen Laundry Ideas We've Done in Mansfield
We've done some clever laundry setups for local folks:
The Breakfast Bar Solution
For a family in Forest Town, we built a breakfast bar with the washing machine hidden at one end. The worktop gives them space to fold clothes, and nobody can tell there's a washing machine there!
The Kitchen-Utility Combo
We helped a couple in Ravenshead create a mini utility zone at the end of their kitchen. We used a tall cupboard for the ironing board, a washing machine under the worktop, and wall cupboards for detergent and cleaning stuff.
The Laundry Station
For a busy mum in Sutton-in-Ashfield, we made a dedicated laundry station with:
- Stacked washer and dryer
- Pull-out sorting baskets
- A slim cupboard for the iron
- A fold-down mini ironing board
Our Process for Adding Laundry to Your Kitchen
- We visit your home - to see your space and understand what you need
- We draw up options - usually 2-3 different ways to fit your laundry in
- We help you pick appliances - ones that fit your space and budget
- We sort all the plumbing and electrics - no need to hire separate tradespeople
- We build and fit everything - including any special cupboards or worktops
- We make sure it all works proper - and show you how to use it

Kitchen Laundry Questions We Get Asked
Where should a washing machine be placed in a kitchen?
Most common is under the worktop, but we can put it almost anywhere there's plumbing access. Corner units, tall cabinets, and islands can all work too.
Is it OK to have washing machine in kitchen?
Yes! It's the most common place in UK homes. Modern machines are quiet and can be hidden behind cupboard doors so they don't spoil the look of your kitchen.
How do you hide a washing machine in a kitchen?
The easiest way is with an integrated machine that has a cupboard door attached to the front. We can also hide them in special cabinets, behind sliding doors, or in a utility cupboard.
Is it better to have a washing machine in kitchen or bathroom?
In the UK, kitchens are much more common and usually better. Bathrooms can be too humid and often don't have space. Plus, kitchens already have the right plumbing and you're more likely to be there to hear when the cycle finishes.
Can you put a washing machine under a worktop?
Definitely! Standard washing machines are designed to fit under a 900mm high worktop. We just need to make sure there's proper ventilation and access to plumbing.
